About the course:
This training is open to psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and other health care professionals. All workshops are conducted with a combination of lecture, discussion, exercises, demonstrations, and practice. They will include a review of both traditional and alternative theories of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This course attracts a total of 100 CPD hours (face to face & online learning) over 6 months and meets the education component for credentialing as a Stabilisation Based Therapy Practitioner (SBT Practitioner).
This training embraces three major goals:
- First, to make a relevant bridge between trauma & recovery based theory and clinical practice;
- Second, to make non-touch somatic tools available to the trauma practitioner;
- Third, to equip therapists to distinguish and help clients who: 1) are not good candidates for processing trauma memories and 2) those who are good candidates for processing memories.
These goals underlie the principles addressed in The Body Remembers (Vol 1 & 2), DBT Skills Training Manual putting into direct practice the tools presented there as well as many others.
The training is grounded in the belief that the therapist working with trauma must become familiar with many theories, techniques, and treatment models to ensure that therapy will always be tailored to the needs of the client. Therefore, it is designed to enhance, not replace, skills and knowledge already held by the participants. In the past, practitioners from many disciplines (psychoanalysis, psychodynamic, EMDR, cognitive behavioural, hypnosis, Gestalt, body psychotherapy, TA, etc.) have all found this training to be a complement not a conflict.
Part One: Completed Online
- Reducing risks of trauma therapy is the focus of this workshop and the foundation of the entire training.
- Theoretical material includes: psychology of stress and trauma – including the role of dissociation; physiology of stress and trauma – including how brain and nervous system communicate during and following traumatic events;
- Defining types of trauma clients; “putting on the brakes” for containment, and safety, and regulating hyperarousal.
- Experience with basic body awareness, muscle toning, boundaries, and the use of resources will provide the basis for direct practice during the remainder of the training.
- Development and identification of client resources, skills and strategies for stabilisation
Part 2: Face to Face Session in Melbourne
- Theory and technique of therapeutic treatment will be the focus of this workshop.
- Both cognitive and somatic sides of transference and countertransference will be explored.
- Memory theory will be presented as it applies to traumatic memory.
- In groups of three, participants will begin practicing Peter Irvine’s SIBAM dissociation model as a multifaceted tool that can be used to enhance resolution of trauma.
- Participants will also be encouraged to use the theory they have learned to develop their own techniques.
Part 3: Face to Face Session in Melbourne
- Integration of both theoretical and practical material from all three workshops will be the focus, reinforcing the bridge between theory and practice.
- Issues involved when trauma therapy is the sole aim of treatment, as well as when it is a part of long-term psychotherapy, will be addressed.
- The BODYnamic ‘running technique’ will be introduced as an imaginal, mind/body integrative procedure for reawakening the flight reflex and reducing hyperarousal.
- Participants will be supervised in making relevant choices of techniques both during role-plays and during client consultation.
